Together with customers, partners and employees, CODEMA wants to utilize the possibilities for CO2 and energy reduction and thereby reduce its CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Reducing CO2 and energy consumption is part of responsible business operations. In addition, CODEMA feels as a total supplier of horticultural solutions in the food sector, socially committed to contributing to our global climate challenge. Our achieved position and certification on the CO2 Performance Ladder of the Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement and Business (SKAO) in November 2020 is the first step in this regard.
CODEMA has an ambitious goal when it comes to CO2 and energy reduction: completely CO2 neutral. To achieve this, we developed a structured plan to measure, reduce and compensate CO2 emissions and energy consumption. The first step is to obtain certification level 3 on the SKAO CO2 Performance Ladder as of October 2020. CODEMA’s 2019 footprint with scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions, indicates 2,140 tons of CO2 emissions. CODEMA fully offsets these emissions by planting trees in Spain and Texas. We achieve this through the Land Life Company, a company that specializes in CO2 reduction through reforestation.
In addition to compensation, CODEMA is now taking a number of measures to reduce its 2019 footprint, such as:
• Deploy low-emission vehicles and e-mobility concepts in its global fleet.
• Increasing use of renewable energy – such as solar and wind energy – that emits little or no CO2.
• Committing ourselves to use distributed energy systems in our manufacturing facilities and office buildings to optimize energy costs.
• Restoring nature through reforestation. Reforestation removes CO2 from the air, restores the groundwater regime, promotes biodiversity and rebuilds communities.
The CO2 Performance Ladder is an instrument that helps organizations such as CODEMA to reduce their CO2 emissions in the organization, in projects and the business community. It provides insight into the different energy flows and the footprint. It encourages CODEMA to develop ambitious goals to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption. CODEMA communicates about its reduction policy to internal and external target groups frequently. In addition, they participate in an initiative that focuses on reducing CO2 emissions and energy use.
Our footprint, objectives, measures and initiatives are included in our CO2 progress report and energy action plan (all in Dutch):
After the industrial revolution, CO2 emissions and energy consumption worldwide skyrocketed. The result: global warming. The consequences for nature and the quality of life in large areas are significant if our planet becomes too warm. To achieve far-reaching CO2 and energy reduction internationally, 195 government leaders signed the ‘Paris Climate Agreement’ in 2015. By 2050, greenhouse emissions will be reduced by 95% to limit global warming. The climate agreement of the Netherlands has an intermediate goal: 49% less CO2 emissions in 2030 compared to 1990.
